Everyone knows how science and the Bible have always been at war. The scientific community has always opposed the complexity of God’s creation as mentioned in Biblical scriptures. However, what if I tell you that way before some scientific discoveries were made, they were mentioned in the Bible?
Earth’s Free Float in Space
“He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth upon nothing.” (Job 26:7)
Some fifteen hundred years ago, ancient nations were confident that something or someone was “holding” the planet. For instance, the Iroquois or the Haudenosaunee and those from the Gabrielino Indian religions believed that the earth was sitting on the back of a huge tortoise (and it was rumored that the turtle was standing on a serpent). The indigenous Japanese Ainu people brought forward their belief of the vast ocean of the world “sleeping” on the backbone of a trout – and when it was sucking in and spewing out the water of the ocean, the trout was believed to be creating the surging of tides.
But, wait, there’s more.
In Greek mythology, for example, Hercules was responsible for holding the earth but he tricked and passed it to Atlas when the latter failed in a fight against Zeus. As per the ancient Norse religion, the four corners of the world are held by four dwarfs (not those of Snow White’s, of course) namely, Nordri, Vestri, Austri and Sudri. And lastly, in Shintoism, it is believed that god of wind, Shine-Tsu-Hiko, is the one who’s holding up the sky with his mighty hands.
Today, these “interpretations” have become part of ancient mythologies because mankind has finally come to understand what’s really “holding” the earth and it’s called gravity.
In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton published the Universal Law of Gravitation. And, I’m sure today everyone is pretty familiar with the story of how young Isaac Newton was sitting beneath an apple tree and coming up with the greatest discovery in the history of mankind.
However, the question that arises here is how on earth Job knew that the earth hung on nothing when science itself discovered the truth only in 1650.
My take on it is that Job might have been the author of the book, but he knew nothing about space, universe or gravity. He was a simple shepherd. I believe this book was written from the revelation of the Creator himself.
The Earth Is Round
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.” (Isaiah 40:21-22)
I’m sure you’ve heard of the famous Christopher Columbus, but have you heard that there was an old story when some advised him against sailing too far west as the earth is flat and he might fall off the “edge”.
Well, that’s not a real story, but a tale from a fictional biographical account written by Washington Irving. However, it is true that before Aristotle, the flat earth was a common idea in ancient tribes and ancient Europe-Middle East. In fact, even the ancient Mayans and Aztecs used to believe in a flat Earth and maybe, if what I’ve heard is true, some of the ancient China believed in a square-shaped Earth.
Ancient people didn’t travel much and were mostly attached to their lands, cultures and religions that they didn’t give much thought to the shape of the earth. And, it was only around 500 BC that Greek Philosophers concluded that the earth was round. However, how is it possible for the Bible to mention about the earth being round when the book of Isaiah was written between 740 and 680 BC?
